This is our original clarifying shampoo bar, created in 2013 by a hair stylist and her client (a soap maker).

Follow our How-to guide. Shampoo bars have been around since ancient times, offering a natural and environmentally friendly hair care solution.

Our formula primarily features apple cider vinegar for its ability to create a lovely lather, clarify minerals and hard water, and gently remove trapped oils from the hair. We’ve infused our bars with rosemary and mint, invigorating the scalp and promoting healthy hair growth.

Original Formula Ingredients: Sodium canolate, acetum, glycerin, sodium castorate, sodium mango butterate, sodium lactate, limnanthes alba (meadowfoam) seed oil, hydroxypropyltrimonium honey, and sodium sunflower seedate.

Oil-based ingredients properties alter during the soap making process and will not leave buildup on your hair.

“Not A Strip Bar” contains none of these: Sulfates, parabens, silicones, or phosphates and is color-safe.

Short Recap:

Replace your shampoo with our bar and clarify your hair at least once a month for optimal results. Rub the shampoo bar between your palms 3 – 4 times before application. Wash roots, mid-shaft to ends, rinse well, and repeat if necessary.

Ingredients

Canola Oil

Feature: Lightweight emollient with high levels of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.

Benefit: Hydrates the hair shaft without leaving a greasy residue. It smooths the cuticle to reduce frizz, yet is light enough not to interfere with the “clarifying” action.

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)

Feature: Low pH (acetic acid) and natural alpha-hydroxy acids.

Benefit: Closes the hair cuticle to boost shine, removes hard water mineral buildup, and restores the scalp’s natural pH balance. It reduces dandruff and eliminates odor-causing bacteria.

Glycerin

Feature: Humectant (draws moisture from the air).

Benefit: Prevents the stripping effect of clarifying shampoos by pulling hydration into the hair shaft, keeping hair soft and pliable rather than brittle or straw-like.

Castor Oil

Feature: Ricinoleic acid (a unique fatty acid) with antibacterial/antifungal properties.

Benefit: Deeply moisturizes the scalp to counteract the drying effect of sulfates/harsh cleansers. Promotes thicker-looking hair over time and helps fight scalp infections (dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis).

Mango Seed Butter

Feature: Solid butter rich in stearic and oleic acids, similar to cocoa/shea but non-comedogenic.

Benefit: Provides intense conditioning and slip (detangling) without clogging pores or leaving heavy residue. It protects hair from UV damage and heat styling while softening coarse strands.

Sodium Lactate

Feature: Natural salt of lactic acid (humectant + hardness regulator).

Benefit: Hardens the shampoo bar naturally (no synthetic hardeners) while attracting moisture to the hair. It mildly exfoliates the scalp to remove dead skin cells and product flakes.

Meadowfoam Seed Oil

Feature: Long-chain fatty acids with exceptional oxidative stability (resists rancidity).

Benefit: Creates a protective “shield” on the hair that mimics the skin’s natural sebum. It locks in moisture for days after washing and detangles hair without weighing it down. Extremely long shelf life for the bar.

Honeyquat (Honeyquat®)

Feature: Quaternized honey derivative (cationic humectant).

Benefit: Positively charged, so it adheres to damaged, negatively charged hair. It provides slip and anti-static properties (no flyaways) like a synthetic silicone, but is natural and water-soluble. Adds incredible shine and softness without build-up.

Sunflower Oil

Feature: High in vitamin E and linoleic acid; very low in oleic acid.

Benefit: Lightweight non-greasy conditioning. The vitamin E acts as a natural preservative. It seals the cuticle to lock out humidity (reducing frizz) while allowing moisture to enter—perfect for fine or oily hair types that need clarifying.

Activated Charcoal

Feature: A detoxifying ingredient with deep-cleansing properties.

Benefit: Helps remove excess oil, dirt, and impurities from the scalp, making it great for oily hair and dandruff control. Also helps with scalp detoxification and promotes volume.

Aloe

Feature: Cooling, water-soluble gel/extract rich in polysaccharides, vitamins, and enzymes.

Benefit: Soothes an irritated, itchy, or sunburned scalp. It adds a “slip” that reduces friction while washing, helping to detangle hair naturally. It also fights the drying effect of salt by depositing a microscopic, non-greasy moisture film.

Rosemary Essential Oil

Feature: High in 1,8-cineole, camphor, and rosmarinic acid (vasodilator and antioxidant).

Benefit: Increases blood circulation to the hair follicles, which may encourage thicker, faster-growing hair. It is a powerful antioxidant that prevents premature graying and fights dandruff-causing fungi. Scent: herbal, medicinal, fresh.

Mint Essential Oil

Feature: High menthol content (TRPM8 receptor agonist – triggers cold sensation).

Benefit: Creates an intense “tingling” or cooling sensation on the scalp, signaling deep cleansing and invigoration. This masks the “stripped” feeling of a clarifying wash, reduces perceived itching, and naturally repels lice/gnats. Scent: sharp, clean, bracing.

Lime Essential Oil

Feature: Terpenes (limonene, citral) with astringent and antiseptic properties.

Benefit: Dissolves excess sebum and waxy product buildup faster than the shampoo base alone. It brightens dull hair (adds “pop” to blonde/light hair) and leaves a fresh, citrus “just washed” scent. Crucial: Must be distilled lime oil to avoid phototoxicity (skin burning in sun).

Pink Himalayan Sea Salt

Feature: 84 trace minerals (magnesium, calcium, potassium, iron oxide – gives pink color) + coarse crystalline texture.

Benefits:

Physical exfoliation: Scrubs dead skin and product flakes off the scalp.
Volume + Texture: Swells the hair cuticle slightly, creating immediate “grit” and lift at the roots (perfect for fine/flat hair).

Directions for Use

Steps to Using a Shampoo Bar to Cleanse or Clarify:

Rub the bar in the palm of your hands to create lather.
Set the bar aside and rub your palms together to create lather.
Use fingertips to cleanse the scalp.
Scrunch lather in from ends to roots.
Repeat the lather process by rubbing soap together into your palms as needed to wash all of your hair.
Gently finger rake lather through hair and pinch lather into ends to remove any buildup resting on those ends.
Rinse well and repeat if necessary; follow with your conditioner.
